What is the school trip to The Odyssey?

The Odyssey, The Immersive Journey is a 90-minute educational visit at Nave 16, Matadero Madrid, where students travel to Mycenaean Greece and relive Odysseus’s journey home to Ithaca, guided by the voice of Homer. It combines five experiences in a single ticket (stage recreations, an interactive metaverse, virtual reality, 360º immersive projections and a holographic installation) and is available entirely in English.

Immersion is no substitute for the text: it prepares you for reading and enhances your reading experience.

Why it is an educational experience

The Odyssey, The Immersive Journey has also been designed as an educational tool. Each stage has its own module, covering the core knowledge of the relevant curriculum, classroom activities and resources for use before and after the visit. In the exhibition space, educational panels explain the characters, distinguish between history and legend, and introduce the Homeric question, whilst the tour is tailored to the group’s pace.

The Mycenaean civilisation and Homer: from the classroom to the living room

The exhibition transports pupils to Mycenaean Greece – the world of the palaces of Mycenae, Tiryns and Pylos – and to the context that led to the Trojan War, before following Odysseus on his return to Ithaca. In this way, it explores both the epic poem and the world that inspired it: real history and myth, side by side.
